If you’re like me, YOU LIKE TO PLAN! So, even it feels like school just let out, you’re already prepping for Back-to-School season. Whew! Between the supply lists, new routines, and a summer that’s flying by faster than a PCS order, the last thing we need is a budget buster when it comes to school clothes. If your kiddo wears a uniform—or just went through a growth spurt overnight like mine—don’t worry. I’ve got your six!

Here are three places I always check first to keep those growing pains (and price tags) manageable:
- Ask for That Military Discount (Everywhere!)
- Whether it’s Old Navy, Chubbies, or Children’s Place, always ask if they offer a military discount. It’s not always advertised, but you’d be shocked how many stores will knock off 10–20% when you flash your ID, and those savings add up quick.
- Pro tip: Sign up for their email lists or apps—sometimes the military discount stacks on top of clearance or seasonal sales with Converse or Rack Room Shoes (That's what I call a savings jackpot).
- Thrift Stores & Base Exchanges Are Hidden Gems
- Thrift stores are a treasure hunt, but when you find a $3 pair of barely-worn uniform pants? Chef’s kiss. Don’t skip the BX/Exchange either—they carry school basics and your savings are tax-free!
- Pro tip: Check the “donation bins” or lost-and-found sales that some schools or churches host. You might score a whole wardrobe for under $20.
- Social Media = Savings Goldmine
- Don’t sleep on Facebook Marketplace or local military spouse groups. I’ve found barely-worn polos, khakis, and even entire uniform bundles for a fraction of store prices.
- Bonus Idea: Many folks post free “porch pick-ups” when they just want to clear space. It’s like thrifting without having to go to the store!
- Pro Tip: Search your local area + “school uniforms” or the name of your child’s school. You’ll be surprised at what pops up.
Military life already requires flexibility—we’ve mastered the art of doing a lot with a little. Back-to-School shopping doesn’t have to be stressful or expensive. So, with a little creativity and these go-to spots, your kids will be dressed for success without blowing the budget.
